Occasional Invaders: Box Elder Bugs, Stink Bugs & Elm Seed Bugs
Don't Let Seasonal Pests Take Over Your Home
Box elder bugs, brown marmorated stink bugs, and elm seed bugs may not cause structural damage, but they can quickly become an unwelcome nuisance when they gather on your home's exterior or find their way indoors.
At A&A Pest Control, we provide targeted treatments designed to support population management for seasonal pest activity around your home or business and to help keep occasional invaders where they belong: outside.
Whether you are seeing hundreds of box elder or stink bugs on sunny exterior walls or finding them inside your home during seasonal changes, our technicians will recommend a customized treatment plan for your property.
How do I get rid of them?
Box elder bugs are a common seasonal pest throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington, and along with brown marmorated stink bugs and elm seed bugs they are the occasional invaders we encounter most. Professional treatments and exclusion recommendations can significantly reduce their numbers and help prevent them from entering your home. Because these insects are widespread and continually migrate from surrounding trees and neighboring properties, complete elimination cannot be guaranteed.
Our treatment program may include:
- Thorough exterior inspection
- Identification of entry points and conducive conditions
- Targeted exterior perimeter treatment
- Treatment around windows, doors, soffits, and other common entry areas
- Recommendations for sealing potential entry points
- Follow-up recommendations based on seasonal pest activity
For severe seasonal activity, our technicians may recommend recurring exterior services to provide continued population management throughout the season.
Are occasional invaders dangerous?
No. Box elder bugs, stink bugs, and elm seed bugs do not bite, sting, or cause structural damage to homes or commercial properties. They are nuisance pests. In large numbers, though, they can create several challenges:
-
Large numbers can enter homes during seasonal changes.
-
Dead insects may attract spiders and other scavenging pests.
-
Stink bugs release an unpleasant odor when crushed or disturbed.
-
Large populations can become difficult to manage without professional treatment.
-
Constant indoor pest activity can become frustrating for homeowners.
Protection plans that cover occasional invaders
Properties that see heavy activity year after year often do best on a recurring exterior program. A&A's Bug Bundle pairs an exterior perimeter inspection with an application for crawling insect control, on a quarterly or bi-monthly schedule. Full plan details on the Services page.

What are occasional invaders?
Occasional invaders are insects that typically live outdoors but enter homes in search of warmth, shelter, or overwintering sites as the seasons change. Unlike termites or carpenter ants, these pests do not cause structural damage to your home or pose significant health risks to humans. However, they are considered a nuisance pest when they gather in large numbers around windows, siding, doors, attics, and living spaces.
Three species turn up most around Northwest homes and businesses.
-
Box elder bugs
Black with red or orange markings, about 1/2 inch long. They cluster in large groups on warm, south- and west-facing walls, around windows and siding, and near the box elder, maple, and ash trees they feed on, moving into attics and wall voids in fall.
-
Brown marmorated stink bugs
Shield-shaped and mottled brown, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch long. They gather around gardens and landscaping, on window frames and exterior walls, and work indoors as the weather cools.
-
Elm seed bugs
Small, about 1/4 inch, black with reddish-orange markings. They stay near elm trees and collect on exterior walls and window frames, moving into interior living spaces during their seasonal migrations.
Occasional invader prevention tips
While no home can be made completely pest-proof, these steps can help reduce seasonal pest activity:
-
Seal gaps around windows, doors, utility penetrations, and siding.
-
Install screens on windows, vents, and openings to prevent access.
-
Repair damaged weather stripping and door sweeps.
-
Reduce exterior lighting during peak activity when practical.
-
Keep vegetation trimmed away from the property.
-
Remove excess clutter and debris near the foundation.
-
Inspect attic vents and exterior screens for openings.
-
Vacuum or physical removal is recommended for small infestations.
-
Schedule exterior pest treatments before seasonal pest activity peaks.

FAQs
Can A&A help with severe stink bug, box elder bug, or elm seed bug infestations?
Absolutely. Our technicians will inspect your property, seek to identify contributing conditions, and recommend a customized treatment plan based on the type of pest, the level of activity, and your property's unique needs.
Do box elder bugs, stink bugs, or elm seed bugs bite?
No. These pests do not bite, sting, or cause structural damage to homes or commercial properties. They are nuisance pests: large groups gather around windows, siding, doors, and attics, stink bugs release an unpleasant odor when crushed or disturbed, and dead insects can attract spiders and other scavenging pests.
Why do occasional invaders come indoors in fall?
Occasional invaders live outdoors most of the year and move inside in search of warmth, shelter, or overwintering sites as the seasons change. Box elder bugs settle into attics and wall voids during fall, stink bugs appear inside homes during cooler months, and elm seed bugs enter living spaces during seasonal migrations.
Can occasional invaders be completely eliminated?
No treatment can guarantee complete elimination, because these insects are widespread and continually migrate from surrounding trees and neighboring properties. Professional treatment and sealing of entry points bring their numbers down, and a recurring exterior program keeps seasonal populations in check year after year. Vacuuming or physical removal works well for small indoor infestations.
