Common Pests in Vancouver
Mature trees mark Vancouver's older neighborhoods, like Arnada and Carter Park, and the Burnt Bridge Creek greenway runs eight miles of woods and wetland across the city, cover that roof rats and carpenter ants both use. Season by season, other pests turn up closer to people: in kitchens, garbage bins, picnic areas, and apartment buildings.
-
Spring, March through June
Odorous house ants, the ants that smell like rotten coconut when crushed, trail into kitchens from March into June, in apartments and houses alike. They nest almost anywhere, from leaf litter outside to wall insulation and cabinets, and one colony can hold several queens. Wiping up a trail leaves the nest untouched.
-
Summer, July and August
House flies breed in garbage and other decaying material, and in warm weather one can go from egg to adult in as few as 7 to 10 days. Behind downtown restaurants and at home alike, bins with tight lids, emptied often, keep a few flies from becoming many.
-
Late summer into fall
Yellowjackets turn to picnics, garbage, and sweet drinks as the insects and nectar they live on thin out, and Washington State University notes they are most aggressive in late summer and fall. At Esther Short Park's picnic areas or on a backyard patio, keep drinks covered and bins closed, and don't swat.
-
Winter, November through February
With fewer pests outdoors, the ones that live inside all year get noticed, German cockroaches among them. They hide by day in warm, damp cracks near kitchens and bathrooms, so one seen in daylight usually means a crowded hiding place, and a store-bought fogger tends to scatter them deeper into an apartment building.

Vancouver Pest Control FAQs
Can I get a free pest control estimate in Vancouver?
Yes. For most Vancouver homes, we can quote over the phone: tell us the pest, how much activity you are seeing, where you are seeing it, and the size of your house. Multi-family and commercial properties looking for a bid on recurring service get a complimentary on-site inspection, so the price we give you matches the property.
Do you offer same-day or next-day pest control in Vancouver?
Yes. Call (360) 209-1793 before noon and we will schedule a technician to be onsite the next business day. For urgent problems, call as early as you can. Our office team will do their best to get a technician out the same day or the next.
Is my landlord responsible for pest control in Vancouver?
Largely, yes. Washington's Residential Landlord-Tenant Act requires a landlord to provide a reasonable program for controlling insects, rodents, and other pests when a tenancy begins and, except in a single-family residence, to control infestations during the tenancy. The exception is an infestation the tenant caused, which the tenant pays to treat. In an apartment community, report pests to the management or leasing office, which is how A&A takes resident requests.
Why do Vancouver homes get rats in the attic?
Because roof rats are climbers, and attics are one of their nest sites, along with trees and overgrown shrubbery or vines. They follow branches and power lines onto the roofline, so a mature tree with limbs over the roof gives them a way in, while Norway rats prefer ground level and lower floors. Scratching overhead at night and droppings in the attic are the usual signs.
