Exterior Pest Prevention in Oregon and Washington

Stop Pests at the Outside of the Building

Exterior pest prevention stops pests at the outside of a building, before they reach the rooms people use. On each visit an A&A technician inspects the perimeter, treats the foundation line, sweeps webs and removes accessible wasp nests, services exterior rodent bait stations where the plan includes them, and recommends sealing the gaps and fixing the conditions that let pests in.

How does exterior pest prevention work?

Most pests that end up inside started outside, in the soil, landscaping, and debris around the building, and came in through a gap. Exterior prevention works that zone on a schedule, the same exterior-first approach A&A uses for box elder bugs and stink bugs. A visit covers five parts:

Step 1 of 5 shown

  1. Exterior inspection

Your technician walks the perimeter, looking for activity and nesting sites, entry points, and conducive conditions: vegetation against the walls, debris and woodpiles at the foundation, and standing moisture.

  2. Perimeter treatment

A targeted exterior application along the foundation and around windows, doors, soffits, and other common entry areas, aimed at crawling insects and seasonal invaders before they reach a way in.

  3. Webs and nests

Spider webs are swept from eaves and overhangs, followed by an overhead application for spider control, and accessible wasp nests on the structure are removed.

  4. Rodent stations

Where the plan covers rats and mice, tamper-resistant exterior bait stations are serviced and the exterior is checked for potential entry points, nesting areas, and food sources.

  5. Sealing and follow-up

Your technician recommends sealing the entry points found and notes the conditions to fix in your service report, and the program follows seasonal pest activity from one visit to the next.

Why focus on the outside of the building?

Pests settle in buildings where their needs for food, water, and shelter are met, and the outside is where they find them first. The EPA's integrated pest management guidance notes that blocking pests out and removing those sources means fewer pesticides are needed. It is also where most of the region's seasonal pressure starts:

  • Box elder bugs, stink bugs, and elm seed bugs gather on warm, sunny walls before moving into attics and wall voids.

  • Carpenter ant parent nests are usually outdoors in a stump or log, and branches touching the eaves give them a way in.

  • Norway rats burrow along foundation walls and under slabs, and roof rats nest in trees, shrubbery, and vines.

  • Spider webs and wasp nests build up on eaves, overhangs, and rooflines through the warm months.

  • Damp mulch and debris at the foundation shelter earwigs, millipedes, and sowbugs.

Exterior protection plans for homes

For homes, exterior prevention is built into A&A's recurring bundles, quarterly or bi-monthly. Businesses and apartment communities get an exterior program built from the site inspection.

What does an exterior technician work on?

An exterior visit covers four zones of the building. Each one gives pests something different, so each gets its own check.

  • Foundation and perimeter

The band of soil, mulch, and slab edge along the walls is where crawling insects travel and Norway rats burrow. It gets the perimeter inspection and application, and debris, woodpiles, and wood touching soil get flagged as conducive conditions.

  • Entry points

Gaps under doors, worn sweeps and weather stripping, torn screens, vents, and utility penetrations are how pests get from the outside in. They are treated around and recommended for sealing, since a gap left open lets the next pest through.

  • Eaves and rooflines

Overhangs, soffits, and rooflines hold spider webs, wasp nests, and clusters of box elder bugs and stink bugs, and roof rats reach them along branches and power lines. Webs are swept, accessible nests removed, and soffit areas treated.

  • Landscaping and moisture

Shrubs and branches touching the building act as bridges, and wet mulch, leaf litter, and poor drainage hold the moisture many pests need. Your technician notes these conditions in your service report so they can be fixed between visits.

Exterior prevention tips

These five steps keep the outside of a building less inviting between visits:

  • Trim vegetation back

Keep shrubs and branches at least a foot from the structure, and cut back limbs that touch the eaves or roof.

  • Clear the foundation

Move firewood, debris, and clutter away from the walls, and remove old stumps and rotting logs near the house.

  • Keep wood off the soil

Avoid wood-to-soil contact around decks, siding, and planters, where it stays damp and invites wood-destroying pests.

  • Repair sweeps and screens

Replace worn weather stripping and door sweeps, and fix torn window and vent screens.

  • Move water away

Fix leaking gutters and outdoor faucets, and grade soil so water runs away from the foundation.

FAQs

What does exterior pest control include?

On A&A's home bundles, each visit includes an exterior perimeter inspection and application for crawling insect control, removal of accessible wasp nests on the structure, and sweeping of spider webs followed by an overhead application for spider control. The Bug & Rodent Bundle adds service of tamper-resistant exterior bait stations and an inspection for potential entry points.

Is exterior pest control enough, or do you treat inside too?

The exterior is the focus, not the limit. A&A's bundles include interior services as needed, and on a recurring schedule your services are warrantied in between visits, so if a covered pest issue comes up inside before your next service, we come back and handle it. Most pests that end up indoors came from outside, which is why the outside gets the most attention.

How often should exterior pest treatments be done?

A&A's home bundles run quarterly or bi-monthly. For properties with heavy seasonal activity, such as box elder bugs and stink bugs year after year, our technicians may recommend recurring exterior services through the season, and exterior treatments work best when scheduled before seasonal pest activity peaks. Businesses and apartment communities get a frequency set from the site inspection.

Do you seal entry points?

For rodents, yes: sealing minor identified entry points is part of the Rodent Bundle, and A&A performs minor rodent exclusion with durable materials like hardware cloth and steel wool, coordinated with trapping; vent repair and broader exclusion work are quoted separately. For insects, your technician identifies entry points and recommends how to seal them, and your service report spells out what was found.

Do you offer exterior programs for businesses and apartment buildings?

Yes. Exterior prevention is part of A&A's commercial services and multi-family programs. The complimentary site inspection for any commercial or multi-family property seeking a bid on recurring service looks at entry points, IPM prevention opportunities, and the equipment a full program would need, such as monitoring devices, exclusion, or exterior units.

How much does exterior pest control cost?

Exterior prevention is built into A&A's home bundles, which start at $35 a month for the Bug Bundle, $40 for the Rodent Bundle, and $45 for the Bug & Rodent Bundle. Our office team gives free estimates over the phone, and businesses and apartment communities get pricing from the complimentary site inspection, with no hidden fees.
