Cockroach Control in Oregon and Washington
Don't Let Cockroaches Settle Into Your Kitchen or Your Building
Cockroach control starts with finding where they hide and which species you have. A&A inspects the property, places monitors to track the activity, treats with gel baits and insect growth regulators, and uses other methods for hard-to-reach harborage. Cockroach problems are rarely cleared in a single treatment, so recurring service keeps them from rebuilding.

How do I get rid of cockroaches?
Cockroaches are nocturnal and spend the day in cracks and crevices, so the ones you see are only part of the problem. Over-the-counter sprays and foggers tend to scatter them deeper into the building. Effective control finds where they live, puts bait where they travel, and interrupts reproduction, and the steps below are how an A&A technician does it:
Step 1 of 5 shown
-
Comprehensive site inspection
Your technician locates the high-activity areas and harborage sites, uses monitoring tools to gauge how severe the infestation is, and builds a realistic treatment plan around its size and spread.
-
Monitoring and physical removal
Monitors and glue boards show where cockroaches are traveling and how the numbers change from visit to visit. Vacuuming can also remove roaches and egg cases and cut the population quickly.
-
Strategic gel bait placement
Gel bait goes where cockroaches hide and feed, in the cracks and voids a spray cannot reach. They carry it back to the harborage, which is how it reaches the ones you never see.
-
Growth regulators and hard-to-reach areas
Insect growth regulators keep young cockroaches from maturing into breeding adults. Where bait and growth regulators are not enough, such as hard-to-reach breeding sites, we add other control methods.
-
Recurring service and prevention
Recurring treatments are strongly recommended, because infestations can rebound quickly. In multi-unit buildings we treat all affected and surrounding units, since cockroaches travel through shared walls and plumbing.
Property managers: A&A's Multi-Family program includes no-prep cockroach inspections and treatments, so units are ready without long resident prep lists.
Are cockroaches harmful?
Cockroaches are more than a nuisance. They eat or contaminate human food, leave a lingering odor where they have settled, and can mechanically carry disease organisms on their bodies. Their allergens are also a recognized contributor to asthma, particularly in children. None of that means every sighting is an emergency, but the problem is worth treating early, because populations build quickly.
-
They contaminate food and the surfaces they cross as they feed and travel.
-
They can carry disease-causing organisms from drains and garbage to your kitchen.
-
Shed skins and droppings carry allergens that can trigger asthma, especially in children.
-
They leave a persistent odor in infested areas.
-
Seeing cockroaches in daylight usually points to a large infestation.

Which cockroaches are common in Oregon and Washington?
Four pest species turn up in Northwest homes and businesses, and the German cockroach is the most common. Where each one lives and what draws it in are different, so a technician identifies the species first and builds the plan around it.
Not sure what you are looking at? Send us a photo. Our Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE) can often help identify the pest before your service.
-
German cockroach
The most common cockroach in Northwest homes, behind most kitchen and bathroom infestations. About half an inch long, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head. It wants warmth, moisture and food, hides in cracks by day, and the female carries her egg case until the eggs hatch. It often arrives in boxes and used appliances.
-
Oriental cockroach
About an inch long, dark brown to nearly black with a glossy sheen, and noticeably slower than a German cockroach. It likes cool, damp, dark places such as basements, crawlspaces, drains and the spaces under sinks and washing machines, usually at or below ground level. It also lives outdoors under bark mulch.
-
American cockroach
The largest of the four, around an inch and a half long, reddish-brown with light edges on the shield behind the head. It prefers warm, humid conditions and lives outdoors in sewers and drains, so it shows up in basements and other damp spaces. A large cockroach on the floor near a drain is often this species.
-
Brownbanded cockroach
About half an inch long and easy to mistake for a German cockroach, but marked with lighter bands across the wings and abdomen. It prefers warmer, drier spots than the German cockroach, so look in crevices near electrical appliances, behind wall decorations and in the hollow legs of furniture, not only near the sink.
Cockroach prevention tips
Cockroaches need food, water and a place to hide. These five steps take away all three:
-
Store food and clean as you go
Keep food, including pet food, in sealed containers, wipe up crumbs, grease and spills, and wash dishes before bed. Sanitation does more than any single product.
-
Fix moisture problems
Repair leaks, dry the sink and tub overnight, and keep basements and crawlspaces dry. Oriental and American cockroaches follow moisture.
-
Seal the gaps
Caulk cracks around pipes, wires and baseboards to cut off hiding places and the routes cockroaches use between rooms and units.
-
Check what you bring inside
Look over boxes, grocery bags, luggage and used appliances or furniture for cockroaches and egg cases before they come in.
-
Skip the store-bought sprays and foggers
They tend to scatter cockroaches through the structure and make the problem harder to treat. Call us and let the bait do its work.
FAQs
Why am I seeing cockroaches during the day?
Daytime sightings usually mean a larger infestation. Cockroaches are nocturnal and spend the day hidden in cracks and crevices, so one in the open during daylight often means the hiding places are crowded. Washington State University Extension notes the same. The ones you see are only a share of the total, which is why a full inspection matters.
How long does cockroach bait take to work?
Not immediately. University extension guidance says an effective bait program can take a week or longer to show results, and bait works best when cockroaches have no other food competing with it, so cleaning up and storing food helps. Sprays and foggers used in the meantime can scatter the cockroaches and interrupt the process.
Can cockroaches spread between apartments?
Yes. Washington State University Extension notes that cockroaches can travel between units through spaces behind walls, and plumbing gives them another route. That is why A&A treats all affected and surrounding units in a multi-unit building. Our Multi-Family program includes no-prep cockroach treatments, so units are ready without long resident prep lists.
How much does cockroach control cost?
It depends on the size of the property and the extent of the problem, and pricing stays transparent with no hidden fees. For homes, our office team provides free estimates over the phone. We provide a complimentary site inspection for any multi-family or commercial property seeking a bid on recurring services.
How fast can a technician get here?
Next business day: contact us by noon, and we will schedule a technician to be onsite the next business day. Early treatment keeps the job smaller, so call as soon as you notice a problem.
Does A&A offer recurring pest control plans?
Yes, we offer recurring pest control programs designed to provide year-round protection against common Northwest pests. Service frequency is customized based on your property, pest pressures, and individual needs, with options ranging from monthly to quarterly visits. Recurring service helps prevent problems before they become infestations while providing ongoing peace of mind.
