Common Pests in Seaside

Seaside averages about 77 inches of rain a year, NOAA's normals show, about twice Portland's, and the Necanicum River winds through town, so water shapes the pest list here, from silverfish in damp rooms to rats near the river. From the riverbanks up to the forest at the edge of town, each part of the year has its own pest to watch.

  • Spring, March through June

Odorous house ants come indoors in spring, nesting anywhere from leaf litter to wall insulation and kitchen cabinets. A colony can hold several queens and splits into new ones when sprayed, so store-bought sprays scatter the problem; bait carried back to the nest is what reaches it.

  • Summer, July and August

Yellowjacket colonies, each begun by a queen in spring, keep growing and can reach thousands of workers by late summer. Foragers come for sweet drinks, food scraps, and uncovered trash, so keep garbage lidded and drinks covered outside beach homes and vacation rentals.

  • Late summer into fall

Rats and mice start moving indoors in September. Norway rats dig burrows along foundation walls and in overgrown, weedy ground, then work into crawlspaces, so fresh holes beside the foundation in early fall are worth a look. A rat needs a gap only about the size of a quarter.

  • Winter, November through February

Silverfish need humidity, and Seaside averages more than 11 inches of rain in each of November, December, and January. They hide by day in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and crawlspaces and feed at night on paper, wallpaper paste, and starched fabric; they don't bite, but books and stored papers suffer.

Seaside Pest Control FAQs

Can I get a free pest control estimate in Seaside?

Yes. For most Seaside homes, we can quote over the phone: tell us the pest, how much activity you are seeing, where you are seeing it, and the size of your house. Multi-family and commercial properties looking for a bid on recurring service get a complimentary on-site inspection, so the price we give you matches the property.

Do you offer same-day or next-day pest control in Seaside?

Yes. Call (503) 567-1201 before noon and we will schedule a technician to be onsite the next business day. For urgent problems, call as early as you can. Our office team will do their best to get a technician out the same day or the next.

Why do carpenter ants turn up in Seaside homes near the forest?

Because their parent colonies usually live outdoors, in a stump or log, and Seaside's neighborhoods reach the forest at the Cove, toward Tillamook Head, and in the east hills. Workers forage into nearby houses and can start a satellite nest in damp wood. Sawdust-like frass below a sill or beam is the surest sign, and winged ants indoors from April into early June are another.

Why are dampwood termites a concern in Seaside?

They need wet wood, and Seaside's rain supplies the water. Washington State University notes that dampwood termites live and feed in wet or rotting wood and swarm in late summer or fall, especially after rain. Finding them in or under a house points to a moisture problem such as wood touching soil, a leaking roof or gutter, or a poorly ventilated crawlspace.
