Common Pests in Long Beach

Long Beach runs along a half-mile-wide strip of the peninsula, with dune wetlands to the west and large wetland complexes to the east, and NOAA's normals give it about 78.5 inches of rain a year, more than twice Portland's. On that narrow strip between dune and wetland, each season has a pest of its own.

  • Spring, March through June

Odorous house ants, the ants often called sugar ants, trail indoors in spring and give off a rotten-coconut smell when crushed. Bait works because foragers carry it back to the colony, but it can attract more ants at first; full control may take several weeks. If activity persists, we will return within the warranty period at no additional cost, utilizing additional treatment methods if necessary.

  • Summer, July and August

Western deathwatch beetles, the main beetle pest of coastal wood structures, emerge as adults in summer. In the older neighborhoods east of Pacific Avenue, check crawlspace joists and sills for small round exit holes and fresh, gritty pellets of frass, the sign of larvae feeding inside damp softwood.

  • Late summer into fall

Yellowjackets are at their most aggressive in late summer and fall and sometimes sting without being provoked. The colony declines once it has raised new queens, but until then a ground nest by a path or deck stairs is worth handling before someone steps near it.

  • Winter, November through February

Cluster flies that slipped into attics and wall voids in fall come out to the windows on mild, sunny days. They're sluggish, slightly larger than a house fly, with short golden hairs, and they never breed indoors; tight screens and sealed gaps keep the next batch out.

Long Beach Pest Control FAQs

Can I get a free pest control estimate in Long Beach?

Yes. For most Long Beach homes, we can quote over the phone: tell us the pest, how much activity you are seeing, where you are seeing it, and the size of your house. Multi-family and commercial properties looking for a bid on recurring service get a complimentary on-site inspection, so the price we give you matches the property.

Do you offer same-day or next-day pest control in Long Beach?

Yes. Call (503) 567-1201 before noon and we will schedule a technician to be onsite the next business day. For urgent problems, call as early as you can. Our office team will do their best to get a technician out the same day or the next.

Can rats from the wetlands get into Long Beach homes?

They can. Norway rats burrow in moist ground and prefer to nest where water is easy to reach, according to the state's Department of Fish and Wildlife, so the wetlands on either side of town suit them. From a burrow along the foundation a rat can work into the crawlspace through a gap the size of a quarter. Fresh burrows, gnaw marks around vents, and droppings under the house are the signs.

Which pests stay active through a Long Beach winter?

Moisture pests do. December through February alone average about 32 inches of rain at NOAA's Long Beach station, most of Portland's total for a whole year. Silverfish need humidity and favor damp bathrooms, laundry rooms, and crawlspaces, and dampwood termites live in wet or rotting wood, so leaks and damp crawlspaces keep both going.
